Casalino – A Beautiful Farmhouse Surrounded by the Tuscan Countryside
Escape the stresses and strains of modern life. Immerse yourself in simplicity of life at the beautiful Casalino farmhouse.
A Traditional Tuscan Farmhouse
Finding the time and space to relax is a vital part of this Retreat. There are many things in modern life which can fill our minds and minutes in such a way that they can distract us from deeper things. All of us, however, are in need of times of quiet in order to refocus, to pray, and to reflect on things of a more supernatural nature. This is why we have chosen Casalino as the venue for the Retreat, a very old and rustic building located in a serene and gentle part of the Italian countryside away from busy urban life.
Casalino is also free of many of the modern conveniences that fill our Western lives. The facilities are simple, there are homely dormitories, showers, round the clock hot water and two modern indoor flushing toilets.
Connecting with our sacred history
One of the main reasons Casalino was chosen as the venue for the Retreat is its proximity to La Verna, the sacred sanctuary of St. Francis of Assisi. This area is particularly beautiful, making it a pleasure to basque in God’s creation, finding time for contemplation and for thanksgiving for all that he has given us.
The farmhouse is also set next to an old beech woodland known locally as the Enchanted Forest thanks to its picturesque views and soft, natural beauty. This is the perfect place to take a walk and find some time to reflect in solitude, away from the noise of the group.
Your Stay at Casalino
The majority of our guests choose to either stay in their own tent pitched in the grounds of Casalino, or alternatively housed accommodation is available in one of the communal dormitories/shared bedrooms on a first come, first served basis - these all sleep up to four people and are segregated by gender.
The house is not connected to the mains electric grid. However, you will be able to charge small devices such as mobile phones via a small solar panel system on site. It is thus an opportunity to ‘digitally detox’.
Communal Duties - Food & Mealtimes
Mealtimes are an important interactive part of the Retreat, allowing you to relax and help in the preparation of food and drink for all the participants at Casalino. You’ll help prepare meals as part of your spiritual journey, alongside breaking (and baking!) bread and getting to know other guests.
At Casalino we only use locally sourced, natural, organic produce in our recipes. We focus on delicious and wholesome home-cooking with a distinctly Italian flavour. Tea and coffee are available throughout the day and all the fresh water is supplied straight to the farmhouse via a mountain spring.
